This was my first purchase of a telescope and the Celestron Nexstar 8 SE has enhanced my love of astronomy. I placed my order after reading many telescope reviews and in 2 days my product was at the door. I was shocked how fast it came. I was very excited about viewing the planets and hopefully some deep sky objects. Beginner would be the most appropriate way to express my viewing experience. However, I was able to get the scope setup and struggled with the star alignment. Then I used the CD that came with the product and got to know the night sky. Yes I know, read the material first then play but I was like a kid in a candy store and just couldn’t wait to start viewing.
Celestron’s Nexstar 8 SE telescope has both excellent optics and computerized “GoTo” tracking. The whole thing is put together in a package that’s, light, affordable and portable. The already amazing performance of Celestron’s orange tube C8 telescope has been improved with high performance Starbright XLT coatings, and the single arm Nexstar mount now has “SkyAlign” technology that is very simple to use.
Pros:
- Excellent optics
- Easy computerized GoTo tracking
- Light, portable and affordable
Cons:
- Plastic accessories
- Short battery life
- Too light for astro-photography
Over all. If you are a beginner astronomer and stare up in wonder at the night sky, have sat outside at night and thought about owning a telescope because it was a great night to view the stars and deep sky objects. Or you were afraid of a telescope because your night sky knowledge was limited. Then this is the telescope for you.I love this telescope. Not only does it find the stars and planets for me with its reliable software it will also teach me as its doing it.

Short battery life is a show stopper for me. If something is designed to be powered by a battery, I think it should be designed to use a good battery and use low enough power to be useful.
